How to Solve Google Analytics 4 Quota Issues in Looker Studio: What is the Quota Limit?

How to Solve Google Analytics 4 Quota Issues in Looker Studio: What is the Quota Limit?

If you use Looker Studio to access Google Analytics data, you may have encountered an error such as “Data set configuration error” due to reaching the GA4 quotas. To help you understand and troubleshoot this issue, we will explain what GA4 quotas are and what you can do.

GA4 quotas are limits set by Google Analytics to ensure that the data from the Analytics Data API is used responsibly. When these quotas are exceeded, you will experience errors in Looker Studio. It is important to understand these errors and the limits that are set in order to avoid further issues. Error messages:

  • Exhausted concurrent requests quota. Please send fewer requests concurrently.
  • This property has issued too many requests in the last day.
  • Too many requests using this Google Analytics property have encountered errors in the last hour.
  • This property has issued too many requests in the last hour.
  • This property is denied access to Google Analytics.
  • This property has issued too many potentially thresholded requests in the last hour.
  • This project/property has issued too many requests in the last hour.

What is the quota limit for Looker Studio?

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) API quotas are essential for ensuring consistent performance of your data extraction. Quotas are limitations on the amount of data that can be accessed or transferred over a set period. These limits are set by Google Analytics and not by Looker Studio, and all users must abide by the same restrictions.

The Core, Realtime, and Funnel quotas fall into three categories and have different limits. The most important quotas are concurrent requests (10 or 50 for GA4 360), hourly tokens per property per project (1,250 or 12,500 for GA4 360), and daily tokens per property per project (25,000 or 250,000 for GA4 360).

How many tokens are consumed per request varies depending on the complexity of the request. Using multiple visualizations, accessing large amounts of data, and frequent interaction with your report all consume tokens, so it’s important to be aware of your quota usage. If your Looker Studio report exceeds the available quota for a GA4 property, data sources used elsewhere than Looker Studio may fail to fetch new data.

Track Your Google Analytics token usage

Google Analytics (GA4) users now have the power to efficiently manage their account quota tokens. With the newly released feature, report editors now have the ability to view the number of tokens consumed by their project and GA4 account, as well as the remaining quotas. To take advantage of this feature, simply right-click on a GA4 chart and select “Google Analytics token usage” from the menu. This new functionality allows for better control over the usage of GA4 tokens, making it easier for users to ensure their accounts remain within the quota limits.

How to Solve Google Analytics 4 Quota Issues in Looker Studio?

Use Google Sheets

Google Sheets is a familiar and free tool that many marketers leverage on a day-to-day basis, making it an attractive solution for downloading Google Analytics 4 data prior to sending it to Looker Studio. Unfortunately, there are several drawbacks to this approach.

Google Sheets is not designed to handle large datasets, and manual input errors can occur, leading to incorrect reporting. Additionally, data stored in Sheets can be difficult to keep organized and updated.

If you choose to use Google Sheets for downloading Google Analytics 4 data, be sure to pay close attention to accuracy and organization.

Reducing the number of charts on each page

Redundant data can cause quota-related errors in Looker Studio reports. To avoid this, consider removing any tables, charts, and scorecards that you don’t need to view each time. For example, if you’re running a new ad campaign and need to check user demographics, you may only need to view that section. Instead of leaving it in the report, copy and paste this data to a separate page for later use. This way, you’ll reduce the risk of quota errors and keep your report looking clean.

Limit the data being displayed in your charts and tables

The key is to limit the data being displayed in your charts and tables. Set the maximum number of rows displayed to the same as your table preview. This will decrease the number of requests made to access your GA4 data and reduce possible errors. Additionally, remove any unnecessary dimensions or metrics from your tables. For example, if you know most of your users are from one country, you can remove the Country dimension. Be sure to make your reports as specific as possible and limit the number of tables and charts used. Doing this will help you optimize your reports and increase efficiency.

Limit Usage

Data analysis and reporting can be an invaluable tool for decision making. But knowing when to limit your Looker Studio Reports usage is key. To avoid information overload, look at your reports no more than once or twice daily and optimize it so that all the essential data you need is on page one. This way, you can focus on the data that matters the most and make better decisions.

BigQuery

BigQuery is a powerful big data analytics solution offered by Google Cloud, but it’s not without its challenges. With its native Google Analytics 4 connector, BigQuery allows you to store and query large amounts of data, providing a valuable resource for solving GA 4 quota issues. However, the platform requires a great deal of technical knowledge, which can be a major barrier for marketers who are less tech savvy. Additionally, the task of combining Google Analytics 4 data with other data sets from marketing platforms can be especially daunting. Though BigQuery provides a wealth of data and insights, marketers must weigh the technical challenges against the benefits.

Use Partner Connectors

Supermetrics, which provides the GA4 connector, is a great choice for companies looking for a reliable solution. With Supermetrics, you can access reporting with minimal simultaneous requests and use caching to ensure seamless communication between Looker Studio and the API.

Ultimately, understanding and being aware of the GA4 quotas can help you to maximize your use of Looker Studio and avoid any potential errors.
